Over the years we have built systems utilizing most if not all of the technologies listed below.
Microsoft Office Tools can do a lot just the way they come out of the box, but they can also be programmed to do repetitive tasks at the touch of a button. They can also be programmed to extend their capabilities or work together forming a very powerful solution without a tremendous amount of customization.
Microsoft .NET technology allows you to move applications that were PC Centric (one person has the data) and move them into a Network Centric paradigm where everyone who is authorized to see it has the data.
Oracle is probably the premier database vendor for large systems. Oracle can be used as the repository to feed PC networks or wireless networks in order to allow a wider audience access to the data.
Legacy Application is mission critical code written with older tools. These Legacy Applications often do an excellent job, but as time passes they become difficult to maintain. (A significant part of our business is maintaining and enhancing legacy applications written by other organizations. Often times we can to extend their useful life without re-writing a lot of the underlying code).
UNIX/Linux tools do an excellent job in a number of areas most notably as Web servers, firewalls, and routers. They are also often used as database engines. These can be made to work seamlessly with Microsoft Windows based solutions.
Personal Data Assistant (PDA) is a term used for hand held PALM or Windows CE devices that provide instant access to data that has been down loaded from a larger system. These are the electronic equivalent of a briefcase full of price lists, customers lists, etc. However they can also receive email and browse the web if they are connected through a modem or some type of wireless connection.
BlueTooth is a short range, device to device wireless connection that can be used to solve a host of problems.
802.11 is a wireless local area network. In essence it can replace the wires you have strung all over your facility to network your computer systems.
Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows remote users to access their home office network through a secure channel over the internet. It comes in two main forms. Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) or for the really paranoid security types ..there is IPSEC.
GSM is a cellular telephone technology that includes a web access function.
Bar Code Scanner systems can scan labels at distances ranging from a few inches to many feet. They are particularly valuable as automatic input devices for tracking high value items.
Distributed System is a term describing a network of computers that are often a mix of Windows, UNIX, various devices with embedded micro computers that when take as a whole make one integrated system.
